MP3 to WAV

Save an MP3 as an uncompressed WAV for editing.

What this does

Decodes the MP3 and writes the sound as a 16-bit WAV. The MP3’s tags and cover picture are not carried over.

What it can’t do

Restore quality or change the speed or pitch. It is a format change, not an edit. To cut the recording, use Trim audio.

A worked example

A phone system’s hold music must be a WAV. The licensed MP3 is converted here, comes out as a 28 MB WAV, and uploads to the phone system.

Questions

Does converting to WAV improve the sound?
No. Whatever the MP3 lost when it was made stays lost. WAV only stops any further loss, which is why editors prefer it.
Why is the WAV so much larger?
WAV stores the sound uncompressed, about 10 MB per minute in stereo. That is the price of being exact.
When do I need a WAV?
When an editing program, a sampler, a phone system or a jingle player insists on it, or when you will cut and re-save the audio several times and want no extra loss each time.

Your file stays on this device

The tool above runs in a sealed frame that cannot send your file anywhere. It works with airplane mode on, and the counter above it stays at 0. Here is how you can check that yourself.
