What this does
Repacks the video and sound into an MP4 file that plays on more devices, and leaves out the location, device and date information.
What it can’t do
Make the file smaller, or handle files over about 1.5 GB.
A worked example
A screen recording from a Mac is a MOV that a learning platform rejects. Repacked as MP4, the same recording uploads there.
Questions
- Why is this so fast?
- MOV and MP4 are two wrappers for the same kind of video. The picture and sound are copied from one wrapper to the other without being compressed again.
- Is the quality the same?
- Exactly the same. Not a single frame is changed.
- What if it says the video can't be converted?
- Some MOV files, mostly from professional cameras and editing software, use formats MP4 cannot hold. Converting those means re-encoding the video, which is too slow to do well in a browser.
Your file stays on this device
The tool above runs in a sealed frame that cannot send your file anywhere. It works with airplane mode on, and the counter above it stays at 0. Here is how you can check that yourself.
