What this does
Drag over each part you want to hide. The areas are painted into the picture itself, and the result is saved as a new file in the same format, with its metadata removed.
What it can’t do
Hide what you did not cover. Check reflections, browser tabs, notification banners and the edges of the screenshot.
A worked example
Before posting a screenshot of a booking confirmation, a traveller covers the booking reference, their name and the barcode. A barcode or QR code holds the same data as the text beside it, so it needs a box too.
Questions
- Why a solid box and not a blur?
- Blurred and pixelated text can often be read again by software. A solid box replaces the pixels, so there is nothing left to recover.
- When is blur all right?
- For faces, where the aim is that a person looking at the picture does not recognise someone. For anything written, use a solid box.
- Is the original still inside the saved file?
- No. A new picture is written from the redacted pixels, with no thumbnail, edit history or metadata.
Your file stays on this device
The tool above runs in a sealed frame that cannot send your file anywhere. It works with airplane mode on, and the counter above it stays at 0. Here is how you can check that yourself.
