What this does
Turns the picture in quarter turns and cuts it to the frame you draw.
What it can’t do
Straighten a slightly tilted horizon: turns are in steps of 90 degrees.
A worked example
A photo of a document includes the desk around it. Cropped to the page, it is half the size, and the hidden preview that showed the whole desk no longer exists.
Questions
- Is the cropped-out part really gone?
- Yes. A new picture is written from only the area you kept. No thumbnail or copy of the original is stored in it.
- Does cropping reduce quality?
- The kept area is saved again in the same format at high quality. For a JPG that is a very small loss; for a PNG none.
- How do I adjust the frame?
- Drag on the picture to draw it, drag inside it to move it, and drag a corner to change its size.
