What this does
Rewrites the PDF with its internal data packed more tightly and without unused parts. Every page looks exactly as before.
What it can’t do
Halve a file that is mostly photographs. For those, save the pages as JPGs at a lower resolution and build a new PDF.
A worked example
A 9 MB report exported from a word processor is too large for a 5 MB upload limit. Repacked, it is 4.6 MB and identical on screen.
Questions
- How much smaller will it be?
- It depends on how the PDF was made. Files from office software and web browsers often shrink by 10 to 40 percent. A PDF made of scanned photos shrinks very little.
- Why not just lower the picture quality?
- That makes text in scans harder to read and cannot be undone. This tool only repacks the file's structure.
- Is anything else removed?
- Metadata, earlier saved versions and unused leftovers, which is part of where the saving comes from.
Your file stays on this device
The tool above runs in a sealed frame that cannot send your file anywhere. It works with airplane mode on, and the counter above it stays at 0. Here is how you can check that yourself.
