Remove location from a photo

Take the GPS position out of a photo. Keep the rest if you like.

What this removes

  • GPS latitude, longitude and altitude
  • The direction the camera was facing, speed and GPS time, where the camera recorded them
  • City, region and country fields added by photo software

This page opens with Location only selected. Switch to Remove all to clear the device, date and author details too.

What it can’t remove

The place, if the picture shows it. A view, a shop front or a house number locates a photo as surely as coordinates.

A worked example

A parent posts a photo from a child’s birthday party at home. The coordinates in the file point to the house. With the location removed, the photo keeps its date, so the family’s library still sorts it correctly, but it no longer says where it was taken.

Questions

How do I know if my photo has a location in it?
Add it here. If there is one, it is listed first, as coordinates. An "Open in map" link is offered, but no map loads unless you choose it, because loading one would send the position to a map service.
What does "Location only" leave in the file?
Everything except where the photo was taken, including the date, the camera model and any author name. Choose "Remove all" if you want those gone as well.
Does this change the picture?
No. In "Location only" mode the file even stays the same size, because the GPS fields are blanked in place.
Is turning off location on my phone enough?
For photos you take from now on, yes. Photos already taken keep their position until you clean them.

Your file stays on this device

The tool above runs in a sealed frame that cannot send your file anywhere. It works with airplane mode on, and the counter above it stays at 0. Here is how you can check that yourself.
